Estate Agent In Court For Defrauding Property Seeker

An estate agent, Bolanle Ogunshokin, who allegedly duped an accommodation seeker of N60,000 and subsequently assaulted her, was charged before a Yaba Magistrates’ court in Lagos.

The accused, who resides at No 19 Isreal Ogunbanwo Street, Somolu Lagos, is facing a two – count charge of stealing and assault.

The prosecutor, Corporal Adenike Abudu, told the court that Ogunshokin committed the offence on March 25 2013 at her residence.

Abudu said that the accused obtained N60,000 from Mrs Idowu Olanishola, with a promise to provide her one room apartment, a presentation she knew to be false.

“The accused collected N60,000 from one Mrs Idowu Olanishola under the guise of providing her an accommodation. Ogunshokin disappeared after collecting the money and also failed to fulfil her part of the contract”, Abudu stated.

According to her “on April 2, the accused was caught trying to escape from her home by Olanishola and an argument ensued. Ogunshokin then physically assaulted the complainant, hitting her viciously on the face and  chest.

She said that the offences contravened sections 312 and 171 of the criminal law of Lagos State 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges, and section 312 provides that if convicted of the offence of fraud, the accused is liable to 15 years imprisonment.

The magistrate, Mrs Bola Falorin-William, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with sureties in like sum, and the case was adjourned till May 15th for trial.
