Comptroller Wants Gadgets For FRSC
State governments have been called upon to assist the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) otherwise known as “Road Police”, with the provision of logistics and communication gadgets to further enhance security, safety and efficient operations on the road.
The Assistant Comptroller of Prisons, Mr Imo Ikahokwhuele made the call while presenting a paper titled, “Security, Prospects and Challenges for Patrol Operation at a retreat organised by the Isiokpo Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) held at Vintage Farms, Elele in Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State recently.
Mr Ikahokhuele said for FRSC to adequately and efficiently prevent or minimise accidents on the highway and in our roads, leaves much to be desired, stressing that, “if the regulatory body provides more funds, operation tents for logistics, patrol equipment, administrative capabilities to commensurate with the incidences on our highways.”
He said special patrol operations in collaboration with other security agencies and paramilitary outfits in the country should be sustained for the safety of road users and the citizenry.
According to him, convoy drivers, deplorable condition of our roads and behaviours of some unfaithful road users were some of the challenges facing the road police in their effective patrol operations, and advocated for a legislation that would combat drug driving as well as include road safety into the secondary and tertiary institution curriculum to further enhance safety on our nation roads.
The Prisons Assistant Comptroller however noted that to realise these goals, there is need for an electronic speed measuring and monitoring devices, arrest and self defence tactics, drug detective device, advance detection, apprehension and prosecution of persons under the influence of alcohol and judges and prosecutors seminars to improve current on-going measures of FRSC operations.
“The above is to ensure that through the right information, the new generation of Nigerians will be better road users, thereby reducing to the barest minimum the ugly carnages prevalent on our highways at present,” he said.
Mr Ikahokhaele, who highlighted the importance of security, the statutory functions of the corps and opined that he is proud of FRSC Isiokpo unit command for their display of high standard and professionalism despite the teething odd.
In his paper, an educationist, Mr. Godspower Amadi said the establishment of FRSC is indeed a vision of inestimate value as it ensures the safety of lives and property on the roads, and enjoined them to imbibe the moral standards of the corps to perform better on their job professionally.
Mr Amadi, who highlighted the attributes to obtain the moral standards of good behaviour, noted that, “there is need for an individual in any organisation to perform up to acceptable moral standards in the interest of the realisation of the set objectives of the organisation.”
