Specialist Alerts On Heart Disease
A family health specialist, Dr Femi Amao, has said that frequent heart palpitation might be an underlying symptom of serious heart condition.
According to available information, Amao said that although palpitations were generally considered harmless, in rare cases, they were symptoms of more serious heart conditions.
He said, “Heart palpitations are usually not serious and are harmless, especially if the only symptom is accelerated heartbeats.
“Often, the symptom or feeling goes away on its own, even pregnant women often experience it.
“The causes of this type of heart palpitations are often related to vigorous exercise, stress, anxiety, fear and taking of alcohol.”
Amao said that if palpitations were signs of an underlying heart condition, the person would experience symptoms like chest pain and dizziness, along with accelerated heartbeats.
“If however, you often suffer heart palpitations, with symptoms like shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain and fainting, it might be indicative of serious heart problems and conditions.
“Prolonged palpitation with an underlying cause may result in heart failure, stroke and cardiac arrest.
“It is advised that you visit a doctor for thorough examination if you have any of these symptoms.”
Amao added that some of the heart conditions associated with palpitations included: prior heart attack, blockage of the arteries and heart muscle problems.
He said that if heart palpitations were not due to an underlying heart condition, a sufferer should reduce anxiety and stress levels that triggered the condition.
