Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State says the strategic reconstruction of roads across the state is aimed at boosting the state’s economy and industrialisation.

The governor said this in Nnewi on Sunday while launching the reconstruction of the Saint Thomas-Egbu-Umuemem-Nnewi-Awka-Etiti road.

He said that the 4.5-km road, which was awarded at the cost of over N700 million, would be completed before the end of the year.

Obi, who said that the contractor had been duly mobilised, stressed that the project and other ongoing projects in the town would be completed by his administration.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Works, Mr Callistus Ilozumba, said that the state government had spent over N80 billion on road projects, adding that over N25 billion had been expended on road projects in Nnewi and environs.

He noted that the governor had fulfilled all the promises he made to the people, adding that he had set aside enough funds to complete all ongoing projects within the life-span of his administration.

In another development, Gov. Peter Obi said that the state government would continue to encourage efforts of the Church in promoting functional education in the state.

The governor said this when he presented N5 million to Guardian Angel Nursery and Primary School, Abatete, for the rebuilding of the school block that was razed by fire recently.

Obi gave the assurance that the government’s intervention would be increased to accelerate the pace of work and ensure early completion of the project.

He, however, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done so far in the project.

The Mother-General, Sisters of Circular Institute of St. Raphael the Archangel, Sister Maria-Gorreti Ngwuagu, expressed gratitude to the governor for his intervention and pledge to bring the school back to its former glory.

Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra on Sunday condemned the killing of the former state deputy governor, Dr Chidi Nwike, describing it as “pathetic, crude and inhuman”.

Obi, who spoke in Awka, described Nwike’s death as a great loss to the state and the country at large. He said that the death had robbed the state of another statesman who was very concerned about the state’s governance and development.

The governor, who described those who killed the former deputy governor as “barbarians’’, wondered why some people could take another person’s life without any compunction.

He commiserated with the family of the late Nwike and prayed to God to strengthen them in their moment of grief.
