The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said that it will build 10,000 housing units across the 36 states of the country for workers and to bridge the gap in housing stock in Nigeria.

The NLC’s acting President, Comrade Promise Adewusi, who disclosed this to journalists at the weekend, said that NLC was coming up with the programme to also tackle the already existing 4,000,000 housing deficit in the country and to make it easier for Nigerian workers to own houses.

He said that housing units will be sited in all the state capitals across the country and that the take-off would begin in Lafia, the Nasarawa State  capital. According to him, the NLC has already entered into partnership with an organization, adding that the houses would be given out to successful owners on mortgage and that the maximum repayment period would be 15 years.

Adewusi also hinted that there will be an initial deposit of 10 per cent of the total cost of the building, depending on the grade and type of the house required.

The NLC boss also condemned the nature and types of low-cost houses which are often offered to workers on mortgage, describing them as inadequate and not befitting in terms of quality, pointing out that NLC would make a difference with respect to that.

Meanwhile, the Nasarawa State Government has earmarked 300 hectres of land for building of low-cost hosing units to tackle housing problem in the state.

The state Governor, Alhaji A. Tanko, who disclosed this to journalists in Lafia at the weekend said that the state government was very much determined to tackle the housing challenges in the state.

He expressed worries over the challenges and sufferings that the people of Nasarawa go through on issues of housing, pointing out that some public officers of high standard do not even live in  befitting houses.

Tanko maintained that by the time government finishes with its programme, citizens and residents of the state will heave a sigh of relief in housing provision.
