Medical Practitioner Warns On Pesticides
A Port Harcourt-based Medical doctor, Okeychukwu Chukwuka has warned that caution should be taken when using pesticides and other chemicals, especially insect killers.
Dr Chukwuka, also an expert in Family Medicine, stated that investigations have shown that these chemicals have adverse effects on the quality of sperm in men.
He noted that though, there are other environmental factors that affect the quality and number of sperm in men, over exposure to chemicals such as insecticides, herb icicle, pesticides, and even paints and textile reagents pose the most danger to men’s fertility.
He stated that these chemicals could result in low sperm count and poor quality of the sperm cells, which he said are a major cause of infertility in men.
Dr Chukwuka further said, these chemicals may affect spermatogenesis, which lead to poor semen quality, explaining that semen helps the sperm motility.
He regretted that most people overlook this fact and put themselves in the danger of damaging their sperm producing organ and changed on caution when handling these chemicals.
He listed other sperm quality damaging elements to include, lead fumes, gamma rays from X-rays, impact on the scrotum and work related stress.
