Lawyer Cautions On Conflicts

Conflicts  are not in themselves bad, but a kind of  instrument of progress in human relationship.

This was the view of the principal State Counsel, Department of Civil Litigations, Rivers State Ministry of Justice, Princess Mma Mercy Agetua, when she  delivered an address titled, “conflict Resolution: A Tool for Realising  an Enduring Peace in Niger Delta” in a meeting organized by the Rotary club District 9140 Port Harcourt Central in Port Harcourt over the weekend.

She said  conflicts are at times inevitable and can also be positive and desirable in other cases.

Agetua expressed belief that it could bring about some necessary changes, generate new ideas in the society and also enable people to learn more about themselves.

The lawyer, noted that Alternative  Dispute Resolution (ADR) was borne out of the positive appreciation of conflicts.

She also stressed the need to see mediation as a private, voluntary and informal  process, selected parties must try to reach a mutually acceptable  settlement.

According to her, “it cannot deal without  working towards a common goal of a satisfactory and holistic process”.

Describing  mediation as one of the best ways to manage conflicts, she said litigation was  cumbersome and bounded by rigid rules and processes.

She pointed out that arbitration was devised to over come some of the problems encountered in litigation, and added that its process was adversarial and formal.

Meanwhile, she has advised parties to always be sincere in all cases to enable them easily resolve their differences.

Earlier, the President of District 9140 of the Port Harcourt Central   Rotary Club, Potarian Okwun Omeaka,  lauded the lawyer for what he described as a job well done, while calling on the people to always donate generously to the Rotary club to enable it deliver credibly to the society.
