The Kano State Government last Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese firm for the construction of a modern intra-city rail system in Kano.

The project would be executed in five phases within four years.

A statement by Alhaji Halilu Dantiye, the Director of Press to Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso, did not give the cost of the rail line but said the company would immediately commence its engineering designs.

It stated that the agreement was signed on behalf of the government by the Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, while the Managing Director of CCECC, Mr Chao signed for the firm.

The statement explained that the rail project was initiated by the governor to ease traffic congestion experienced by commuters in the metropolis.

“Barring any unforeseen developments, the state government plans to complete at least one rail line track by 2015, when the tenure of this administration expires,’’ it added.

On his part, the managing director, assured that the company would deliver on the agreement within the four year period.
