FRSC Records Low Road Accidents In Enugu
The Enugu State Sector Commander of Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Fumbiyi Olawoyin, said the command had recorded decrease in road accidents during its special Easter patrol.
Olawoyin said in an interview last Monday that the rate of accidents was lower than what obtained during the same period in 2012.
“We recorded very low road accidents during this year’s Easter celebrations. The motorists are much organised this year than last year because all the crashes that occurred are at night. Our awareness and enlightenment campaigns are beginning to yield results and if sustained, they will reduce road crashes to zero level which is the global target,’’ he said.
The sector commander said that the week-long exercise recorded six crashes, three fatal, two serious and one minor.
He said that seven persons lost their lives in the road crashes, 17 persons sustained various degrees of injuries while 24 persons were rescued.
He said that 12 vehicles were involved in the accidents which occurred mostly at night and advised commuters to resist the temptation of embarking on night journeys.
Olawoyin also said that other traffic offenders of seat belt violation, use of cell phones, drunk driving, inadequate lights and over-loading were charged to their mobile court.
He urged contractors handling road rehabilitation and the ministry of works to provide enough signs and diversions 500 metres ahead to forewarn motorists of dangers ahead to reduce avoidable accidents.
