The Technical Director, Nigeria Deaf Table Tennis Association, Mukaila Olaoye, has  appealed to parents and guardians to engage their disabled children and wards in sports.

Olaoye told newsmen in Lagos that sports would make the children to become better individuals in the society.

“We need the assistance of parents to encourage their children to participate in sports.

“Most of these special athletes have talents; they should not be left to their fate because such a move would make life to be unbearable for them.

“Sports assist them to be better people and in every disability, there is ability somewhere within them. It is just like those that went for the 2012 Paralympics,” he said.

The Deaflympics Games is scheduled to hold from July 24 to August 4 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Olaoye said that the special athletes should be accorded the same level of recognition being given to the able-bodied athletes.

“Corporate organisations ought to rally round these special athletes because they are eager to represent the country.
