Court Remands Man, 24, Over Rape

A 24-year-old man has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl.

The accused Kingsley Obie, is standing trial on one count charge before a Port Harcourt Chief Magisterate Court presided over by Ipalibo F. Iyiabo for rape and other criminal matters.

The prosecuting Police Officer, Inspector Wilson Isaiah told the court that the accused person on the 1st day of April  2013, at Abuloma in Port Harcourt City Local Government Council in the Port Harcourt Magisterial District did unlawfully have carnal knowledge of one Tamuno Diepreye Stanley, aged 8 years.

The police prosecutor averred that the accused person committed and offence punishable under section 218 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol. II Laws of Rivers State, 1999 .

The accused person was not allowed to make anay plea on the matter brought against him before the court.

Ruling on the matter, the Presiding Chief Magistrate, Ipalibo F Iyiabo while remanding the accused person to prison custody directed the Police Prosecutor to remit the original case file to the office of Chief Registrar who shall forward the file to the office of the DPP for legal advice on the matter.

He however, told the accused person that he was at liberty to approach High Court for his bail and adjourned the matter to 20/5/2013 for mention.
