Illah community in Delta State has urged the state government to make sure the contractor handling the N386 million road project in the community executed it according to the contract terms, including deadline.

The president general of the community’s development union, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye made the call in an interview at Illah, Delta.

Ezemonye, who said the community had waited for a long time for the construction of the road, which links it to its major market at the bank of River Niger, expressed delight that construction work on the project started last month.

Ezemonye, a lecturer, commended the state government for opening up rural communities through construction of access roads.

He charged the government to also give attention to rural electrification, saying that with roads and electricity, the economic life of local communities would be boosted.

At the project site on Saturday, bulldozers were seen clearing bush for the road project. A project supervisor, who pleaded anonymity gave the assurance that the job would be completed within the given timeframe, adding: “We commenced clearing the entire stretch of the road on March 4. We are concluding that stage now and immediately after, we will start filling.

“With the nice nature of the road, especially without existing structures to attract compensation, we will complete the job on schedule.”
