No fewer than 10 senior officers in the Police Command in Anambra State were in Awka last Wednesday decorated with their new ranks by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ballah Nasarawa recently.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka, was among those decorated, just as Nasarawa received the Nigeria Police Games Torch on behalf of Zone 9 Police Headquarters.

The torch is the symbol of the 10th Biennial Police Sports Festival billed for Port Harcourt between March 3 and March 9.

Nassarawa, who addressed the officers urged them to see their promotion as ‘a wakeup call’ for better performance in the fight against all forms of crimes and criminality bedevilling the nation.

He reminded them that promotions come with higher responsibilities and challenges and urged them to buckle up and face the new trend of criminal exploits in the society.

The commissioner also thanked the Inspector-General of Police and the Chairman, Police Service Commission for the promotion.

Seven of the officers, Paul Dung, Okpechi Umezuruike, Nwafor James, Christopher Bassey, Sunday Adama, Emeka Ugwu and Evans Onomuighokpo, were decorated with the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police.

Emeka Chukwuemeka, Pius Omesu and Larry Nwachiegwu, were decorated with the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

In his remarks when he received the festival torch, Nasarawa recounted the contributions of the Nigeria Police to the development of sports in Nigeria.

“Some of our distinguished athletes in this country who were products of Police Games included, but not limited to, CSP Chioma Ajunwa, who was the first Nigeria athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in 1996.

“Late CSP Sunday Bada won gold medal in Sydney Olympic Games in year 2000, DSP Samuel Peter, was world heavyweight boxing Champion in 2008 and Insp. Kikelomo Ajayi, is the captain of the Supper Falcons.

“It is hoped that this Games would serve as an avenue to select potential medalists for Nigeria in the 2006 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, which will erase Nigeria’s not too impressive outing in London 2012,” he said.
