Onelga Polls: PDP Clinches Victory

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the winner of last Saturday’s Chairmanship and Councillorship elections in  Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Chairman and Chief Electoral Officer of RSIEC, Prof Augustine Ahiazu, while announcing the results yesterday afternoon, said the PDP won the chairmanship seat and also won all the 17 councillorship seats in the local government council.

The RSIEC boss noted that the PDP scored a total of 37,570 votes representing 31.98 per cent votes east to beat other political parties in the elections.

According to him, “the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), who came next to PDP scored 178 votes, ANPP 161, CPP 001, ADC 105, AA 018 and SDMP 20 votes.

The Chief Electoral Officer said in the councillorship elections, the PDP secured the 17 wards by beating other parties who vied for the positions.

In Ward 1, the PDP won with 1,678 votes to beat AA 1, AD 19 and NCP 1 votes respectively.

While in Ward 2, the PDP scored 2,383, Ward 3 1,266, Ward 4 4,449 and 1,290 votes in 5 respectively.

The party also won in Ward 6 with 1,573, 5,494 in Ward 7, and 2,913 in Ward 9, the PDP scored 1,725 to defeat other parties.

The summary of the results as announced also indicated that PDP won with 1,907 votes in Ward 10 and in Ward 11, the PDP defeated the NNPP which is the only candidate in that ward with 1,491 votes against 216 votes.

The PDP also won in Wards 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 and was returned unopposed in ward 14.

Addressing newsmen, the Chairman and Chief Electoral Officer said the elections were free and fair, and noted that there was impressive turn at the polls.

He commended journalists for their support and urged them to continue to report correctly at all times.

Meanwhile, the commission has slated Wednesday, March 6, 2013 for presentation of certificates of return to the winners, and said the Oyigbo councillorship election in Ward 8 would be held on 16th March, 2013.

The Director of Press of the commission, Mr Sam Woka announced this  shortly after the chairman of the commission had declared the results of the ONELGA elections.
