Governor Peter Obi of Anambra  State, has warned traders in Onitsha,  to desist from dumping refuse into the drains on Onitsha-Enugu  road.

“I am also warning you to stop trading and disturbing construction workers at the ongoing Onitsha-Enugu road re-construction project by the Federal Government,’’ Obi said.

Obi gave the directive when he stopped over at Atani Junction on the Onitsha-Enugu Road in Onitsha.

He expressed dissatisfaction about the attitude of traders who were currently trading on a lane of the road currently under re-construction.

“I cannot imagine which state in the country where what you are doing now is being done; trading on a road under re-construction and disturbing the construction workers.

“Look at how you have littered the whole place. Just imagine, the new drainage has been overtaken by refuse, especially polythene bags, created due to your trading activities.

“We have learnt from the Federal Government that there will be heavy rainfall this year and when you finally block the drains even the newly constructed ones and the water start disturbing you, then you call the government.

“And if government did not respond; you say the government is insensitive to the calamity, which you are gradually bringing on yourselves.

“I am warning you for the last time. I want to use this warning as a Christmas for you. When I come next time, I will destroy your goods and prosecute anybody caught for environmental offences,’’ he added.

Obi directed the chairmen of Ogbaru, Onitsha-South, Onitsha-North and Idemili North council areas to put their people in check and for them not to over step their bounds.

He directed them to make sure all refuse in the drainage system on the Onitsha-Enugu Road were cleared before dusk on Thursday.
