Lawmaker Wants Permanent Camps In Flood-Prone Areas

The lawmaker representing Port Harcourt Constitutency ll in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Engr Victoria Nyeche, has urged the Rivers State Government  to take advantage of the dry season and warnings from the Federal Meteorogical Agency, to build permanent  relief camps in  flood-prone areas across the state.

Nyeche who was speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt on flooding issues, stated that several alarms and warnings had been raised by the meteorological agency  on the possibility of flooding this year, and that such issues needed not to be overlooked.

She said that something needs to be done in time by the government to build permanent relief camps so as to avoid unpleasant consequences in the event of sudden flooding of the environment.

According to her, “rain will definitely fall and from the reports we have been getting, there is the possibility of another flooding and that is the reason why government should act fast to save the flood prone areas from such hardship”.

Meanwile, the Okrika Local Government Council has set up a Committee for Fire Safety and Enlightenment that will go from place to place within the council’s areas of jurisdiction to educate and enlighten the people on their safety.

This follows the fire outbreak that engulfed a residential building in Ogoloma area of the council which recorded some casualties, with about 25 persons said to have been injured.

Chairman of the council, Tamuno Williams who stated this said that the Fire Safety and Enlightenment Committee will serve as a taskforce that will go from place to place to educate the people on what to do in the event of a fire incidence.

Williams maintained that the council would do its best to ensure that the rate of fire incidents in the area was reduced.
