Kano Traces High Maternal Mortality To Poverty, Ignorance

The Kano State Government said the rampant cases of maternal mortality in the northern states were due to ignorance, dependence on traditional beliefs and poverty.

The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Binta Tijjani, made the announcement in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the ministry, Malam Sanusi Kofar-Na’aisa, on Saturday.

Tijjani, who spoke at a sensitisation workshop, organised by Partnering for Transforming Health Systems II (PATHS 2), said that government was committed to reducing maternal mortality in the state.

She said that the aim of the workshop was to train women Hisbah corps and women development officers on how to sensitise pregnant women with a view to reducing maternal mortality.

“Since the inauguration of the new mobile ambulance scheme by Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, over 600 pregnant women were successfully transported to health centres for safe delivery,” she said

The commissioner commended the governor for improving the standard of living of women, through his empowerment projects as well as healthcare delivery.

She called for collaboration between nurses, midwives as well as female Hisbah corps, to enhance living standard of women in the state.

The Department for International Development in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Health and Women Affairs organised a two-day sensitisation workshop for health officers on reduction of maternal mortality.
