As part of strategies to tackle the impact of flooding in Delta State, the state government has said that it will build permanent relief camps with necessary facilities in place to make life more meaningful, unlike what happened in 2012.

The state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan who made this known at a  meeting with the state’s Flood Committee Government executives and members of the state’s House of Assembly in Asaba, stated that government would adopt three approaches to tackle the impact of flooding, should the prediction of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) come true.

He said “we need to urgently construct permanent camps with basic facilities such as water toilets, health centres, schools, skill acquisition centres, among others”.

According to him, the state government will build permanent relief camps with necessary facilities in place to make life meaningful, unlike what happened in 2012.

The governor said that government would embark on an advocacy campaign an proper waste disposal and encourage flood-prone communities to evacuate to the camps if flooding recurred.

It would be recalled that NIMET had predicted that the heavy rains that caused devastation in different parts of the country and claimed scores of lives in 2012 might still recur this year.

The agency had predicted that the rains might be heavier in some parts of the  North West and the Northern part of Cross River State and many parts of South West were expected to have prolonged rainfall.
