In order to boost crop yield of her host community, the Songhai Rivers Development Initiative (SRDI), has said that farmers in Bunu Tai who have taken advantage of the dry season training programmes were benefiting from such opportunities.

Making this known to our correspondent in a telephone interview recently, the communications officer of SRDI, Mr. Gabriel Epelle said although Songhai has no water reservoir to supply water to farmers in the area, it gives out professional advice to farmers on how to deal with dry season farming.

Said he, “in terms of advice, they usually come to Songhai to receive training.

If they are interested, they can come to receive instructions on how they can irrigate and water their farms during the dry season.

We don’t supply them water because we don’t have a water reservoir for that purpose.

He said in addition to other aspects of training, in enhancing their production capacity and crop yield, a lot of them have reported good results.

“The few that have been coming to Songhai and taken advantage of such trainings have benefited in terms of improved crop yield and turn over”, he said.

According to the communications officer, the training coordinator of Songhai periodically visits the farmers to assess their progress.

He said for those who have actually put what they have learnt into practice as taught by the authorities of Songhai have been getting good results.

He appealed to farmers in the area to always avail themselves of the farming techniques available at Songhai even as he said making business farmers out of the people of Bunu Tai was the priority of the Songhai initiative.
