The authorities of the Nigeria Police have presented cheques worth millions of Naira to the next-of-kins of the 21 deceased police officers who died in active service while serving in zone 6 command.
The cheques which were presented in two categories include the police insurance and the four million Naira from the Rivers State Government paid to four families.
Presenting the cheques to the beneficiaries at a brief ceremony held at the police headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Monday, the Inspector-General of police represented by the out-going state commissioner of police, Mohammed Ndabawa commended the Inspector-General of Police and the state governor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for the prompt payment of the money to the next-of-kins of the various families adding that the money would assist the families to forge ahead in life.
He urged the recipients to make judicious use of the money to better their lives while thanking the state governor for paying one million naira each to every police officer who lost his life in the state.
The on-going police commissioner noted that governor Amaechi within his tenure in the state had so far paid 23 million naira to twenty-three families as a palliative measure to cushion the effect of the death in those affected families.
Ndabawa used the opportunity to thank the people of the state, especially the media for the cooperation given to him while in the state and urged them to extend such gesture to his successor.
In an interview with journalists, one of the beneficiaries, Mr. Benedict Tommy said it was a consolation for the loss but, noted that the money was not enough to assuage the pain.
He lauded the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force for the gesture adding that he would use the money for the betterment of the family.
