Plateau United FC of Jos has maintained its top spot after defeating Taraba United FC of Jalingo 1-0 in a week seven match of the Nigeria National League (NNL) group A.

The match which was played at the Rwang Pam Township stadium, Jos on Monday, was initially slated for Sunday when Nigeria played a semi-final match against Cote d’ Ivoire in the ongoing Africa Nations Cup.

The goal that made the difference was scored via a spot kick taken by defender Emeka Awaziem in the 87th minute of the match.

With the victory, the Jos-based team now has 14 points.

Plateau United Coach, Christopher Danjuma, in an interview with Tidesports expressed delight with the result.

He, however, noted that the team did not utilise its opportunities adequately early in the match.

“We got a couple of good chances but we did not score. In football, when you score early, you compel your opponents to come out and that opens up the game,’’ he said.

Danjuma said that the team would not rest on its oars in its bid for elevation to the premier league.

He promised to work on the team’s finishing, to make it more clinical.

“We will work on our goal scoring abilities, because if you don’t score, you don’t win,’’ he added.
