Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo in Owerri has called for the introduction of military training in Nigerian secondary education curriculum.

Okorocha made the call when the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major-Gen Adebayo Olaniyi, paid him a courtesy call.

He said that the military was known for discipline and that the introduction of military training in secondary schools would inculcate discipline in students.

The governor expressed dismay that most Nigerian children in secondary schools were not disciplined and attributed the current high rate of crime among youths to lack of discipline.

He said that the future of the Nigerian youth was bleak if the problems of unemployment and indiscipline were not tackled.

Okorocha also commended the Nigerian Army for the achievements recorded in the fight against kidnapping and other crimes in the state.

He said that the country would have been overrun by criminals if not for the support the military had been giving to other security agencies.

The governor also called on the Federal Government to integrate local vigilance groups into the country’s security outfit system.

He said that the Imo Security Network, a vigilance group his administration introduced in the state, had helped in reducing crime, especially kidnapping.

Earlier, Olaniyi said that he was on a working tour of army formations in 82 Division, including the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, near Owerri.

The GOC commended the government for the financial and logistic support as well as operational vehicles it had given to the brigade, adding that they had enhanced the performance of the brigade.

He expressed appreciation for the ‘warm’ reception the governor gave him and his entourage.

Olaniyi assured the governor that the army would continue to work to ensure the reduction of crimes to the barest minimum in the state.
