Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has charged Nigerians to imbibe the Super Eagles’ spirit of patriotism and team-work that propelled the team to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

A statement issued by Mr Ebere Uzoukwa, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Media, in Owerri, quoted Okorocha as saying that “the spirit of patriotism and team work is what is required for the nation to overcome its socio-economic challenges”.

Gov. Okorocha noted that “through hard work and dedication, the Eagles have taken the nation back to its pride of place as the giant of the continent”.

He said, “the unity of purpose displayed by the players during the AFCON final match between the Super Eagles and the Stallions of Burkina Faso suggests that Nigeria will certainly retrace its steps to the path of progress”.

Nigeria beat Burkina Faso 1-0 at the final match of the 2013 tournament to lift the AFCON trophy for the third time on Sunday.

The country has won the trophy twice previously in 1980 (Lagos, Nigeria) and 1994 (Tunis, Tunisia).
