The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), says by February 9, it would take a position on state governments that had failed to implement the Teachers Salary Structure (TSS) by the end of January.

The NUT President, Mr Michael Alogba-Olukoya, stated this in a release to journalists that the union was set to convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting over the issue.

The union boss said the union has warned states that had yet to implement the 27.5 per cent increase in allowances under the TSS, to do so by the end of January.

He said, the union had, in August 2009, entered into an agreement with the governors’ forum on the implementation of the new salary structure.

Alogba-Olukoya said that presently, 18 states had yet to implement the agreement.

“We gave the states concerned till January 31 to implement the TSS, but as we speak, nothing has been done to that effect.

He said, “We waited until January 31 to see if the implementation would reflect in their salaries but as we speak, from the collation we have done so far, 10 of the 18 states have paid salaries without implementing it, stressing th.at “We are waiting for the remaining eight to pay their own salaries too and by the time we are through with our collation, we shall convene an emergency NEC meeting on the way forward.

He said, “I want to seize this opportunity to inform defaulting states that the struggle for the implementation of the TSS is still on and we will not relent until justice is attained.”

Olukoya had listed the 18 affected states as Adamawa, Benue, Kogi, Lagos, Ekiti, Abia, Enugu, Cross River, Kebbi, Taraba, Plateau, Delta, Katsina, Nasarawa, Zamfara, Ebonyi, Gombe, and Bauchi.
