NURTW Seeks Provision Of Infrastructure In FCT
The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), National Chairman, Alhaji Nasir Yassin, has appealed for the provision of necessary infrastructure for the union members before implementing the ban of mini buses in the FCT.
Comrade Yassin made the appeal while speaking to Journalists after meeting on the Draft for Mass Transit Framework, presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo at the Presidential Villa.
“He said we are appealing that the FCT transport system should make sure that the necessary infrastructure is put in place before they implement the system because, right now, the long buses, the high capacity buses are not enough to convey commuters to the city, so we are appealing to them. Let make sure that the infrastructure like the BRT lanes is on ground”.
The Union boss said the law enforcement agencies should be up and doing in implementing traffic laws to check excess of commercial bus drivers within the FCT adding that “whoever violates the rules and regulations, the security should deal with such person accordingly”.
The NURTW chairman said the crises rocking the Oyo State chapter of the union had been resolved and new leadership would soon be put in place in that state to protect the interests of the Union members.
The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, had last month directed a delineation of routes for mini-buses and long buses operating in the FCT.
The directive which prohibited mini buses from the city centre attracted public outcry owing to sufferings of commuters.
Following the public criticism, the Minister suspended the implementation for three weeks, for consultations.
The directive further suspended indefinitely the implementation of the policy within the FCT.
