Monarch Makes Case For Community Policing
A Traditional Ruler in Enugu State, HRM, Igwe Charles Nwoye has called for a collective approach towards effective Community Policing to rid the society of criminal elements.
Igwe Nwoye who commented on the growing spate of insecurity in our society, during an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, noted that the perpetrators of various crimes are right in our midst.
He said it was the responsibility of all Nigerians to exert vigilance within their neighbourhood and know the activities of people living within.
According to Igwe Nwoye crime can only be reduced in the society if people volunteer information and alert the law enforcement agents of suspecting movement within the neighbourhood. The Royal father who is the Obioha II of Amuvri in Nkamu West LGA of Enugu State also kicked against the reliance on armed vigilante groups as agents of Community Policing.
He pointed out that most of such vigilante groups comprises of ex-convicts, drug addicts, fugitives and outlaws who used such platforms to perpetrate crime in the society.
He explained that the activities of Boko Haram and other insurgent groups could be checked if people give out security reports on their activities to the police.
The monarch lamented the tacit collaboration of some high ranking individuals with insurgents groups, an ugly trend he noted swell crime in the society.
The Royal father also tasked government officials on the use of security votes, and emphasised that such votes should be judiciously administered to stem the growing spate of crime in the society.
