Minister Tasks Leaders On Projects

The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, has charged Nigerian leaders to always embark on life changing projects to improve the living conditions of the people.

The minister, who made the call last Thursday, in Abakaliki in continuation of the good governance tour of Ebonyi State, said such projects would go a long way to turn around the life of the people.

Maku, who spoke shortly after inspecting the Idembia Bridge constructed by Gov, Martin Elechi of Ebonyi in Ezza Local Government Area, described the bridges as vital to the transformation of the area.

Briefing the minister, the Chairman of the council, Mr Laz Ogbee, said the bridge was a relief as it would improve the social and economic well-being of the people.

“Before now, our people found it very difficult to communicate with their neighbours across the crocodile-infested river .

“We used to pass through Afikpo which is 100 kilometres from here before we see our brothers the other side.

“The situation is worse during the rainy season. In attempt to cross the river by rafter canoes, our people were eaten up by crocodiles,” he said.

Ogbee explained that the road and bridge had saved his people from various mishaps recorded in the past, adding: “We are appreciative of the venture.”

Two elderly women from the area, Theresa Okeh and Agnes Nworie described the project as a welcome development, noting that they were at the scene to thank the governor for the humanitarian gesture.

“This river had in the past claimed the lives of our sons and daughters but today the story is different, thanks to our governor,” they said in their local dialect.
