Man Docked For Allegedly Stealing Mad Woman’s Child

A 38-year old man from Nwuba community  in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State has appeared  before a Port Harcourt Chief Magistrate court for  an alleged stealing of a child belonging to a mad woman  in the area.

The accused  is standing trial  on two count charges of conspiracy and child stealing before Chief Magistrate Ipalibo Iyiabo.

The prosecuting police officer, Inspector Wilson Isaiah told the court that the accused and  others now at large on November 4, 2012 at Nwuba village in Etche Local Government Area within the Port Harcourt magistrate district did conspire among themselves to commit felony, to wit child stealing.

The police prosecutor further  averred that the accused committed  an offence punishable  under section  516 A (1) and section 37 I (1)of the criminal code, cap 37, Vol II, laws  of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999.

The accused, however , pleaded not guilty to all the two count charges  brought  against him but said  he was aware that his friend  sold the baby and ran away.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, Iyiabo granted the accused bail in the sum of fifty thousand naira, one surety in like sum. Chief magistrate Iyiabo said the bail was on health ground, adding that the law empowers him to do so.

He ordered that the surety must attach  two passport photograph and reside within the jurisdiction of the  court.
