The Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WEMASON) has advised governments at all levels to collaborate with stakeholders in the sector to have a cleaner society.
The National Director, Public Affairs of the society, Mr Adeniyi Sanyaolu made the call in an interview with newsmen in Lagos recently in Lagos.
Sanyaolu also urged them engage stakeholders and waste management professionals to work, where necessary, in their localities.
The director stressed the need to designate waste management facilities and allocate appropriate resources for waste management activities at the state and local government levels.
“There are many NGOs and private waste managers in the country that the government can assist to drive effective waste management through infrastructure development.
“They need money to carry out services, need resources, manpower, vehicles, and they should be given allocation when planning the budget.
“Waste is a major challenge facing us in this country as of today, “ he said.
Sanyaolu stressed the need for the private sector, through the assistance of the government, to collaborate with international waste management bodies, to create a forum to improve on the techniques to boost waste management.
He also called on the private sector and those involved in the waste management services to collaborate to improve the environment sector.
