Sokoto Plans Resettlement Camps For Flood Victims

As part of efforts to rehabilitate victims of natural disasters like  flood, the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency has said that the State government will build at least three camps to resettle  displaced persons  in the state.

The Director-General of the Agency, Alhaji Hassan Maccido  made this known when he received  a four man post-flood Health Risks Assessment Committee set up by the minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, in Sokoto recently.

He said that each of the three senatorial zones in the state would have one of the resettlement  camps to cater for the victims of the natural disaster.

According to him, “The camps will have all the social infrastructure to make life easier and meaningful for victims of unforeseen natural disaster.

“These planned camps will have everything required for human inhabitation and  they will be replicated in the 23 local government  of the state in due course. We want to avoid the usual fire brigade  approach to disasters”, he said.

Maccido  also stressed  the need for timely response to disasters in the nation, saying that the country needs  to learn from the developed countries.

He said “we should thank God that we do not have some of the most  terrible disasters like cyclones,  earthquakes and hurricanes,”.

The agency boss also expressed the state government’s commitment to empowering the agency to discharge  its responsibilities, effectively.
