Residents Panic Over Planned Demolition
Residents of the Lateef Jakande Estate located at the Ejigbo Local Government Area of Lagos State are now having sleepless night, following the planned demolition of 50 houses at the estate.
Concerted efforts have been made by residents of the estate to ensure that the Lagos State government reconsiders its stand on the said demolition, or tat worst provides alternative accommodation for those to be affected in the exercise.
In their meeting with the General Manger, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Osanyintolu, the residents had expressed worries over what they described as fear of the unknown and the fate of these home owners after their properties were demolished.
They have expressed concern over the increased rate in cost of acquiring a property including the insurance required and other issues surrounding fresh home ownership in Lagos State.
The step taken by the Lagos State government to demolish about 50 houses at the estate followed the collapse of a two-storey building at the estate which gave the impression that most of the building sat the estate are aged enough to be demolished.
Government had taken a tough stand to ensure that all the buildings at the estate undergo a test to ascertain if they are habitable or not, just to ensure that there is safety to human lives.
The 50 houses that were marked for demolition are those that were considered unfit for habitation after the test were carried out by the Lagos State Raw Materials Testing Agency
