Refuge Dump: LG Boss Gets 7-Day Ultimatum
Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has directed the Chairman, Aguata Local Government Council to remove refuse dumped in the Umuchie gully erosion site within one week.
Obi gave the directive when the National Good Governance Team visited the gully erosion site in Ekwulobia town, Anambra.
The governor said that the blockage of the drainage system at the erosion control site was undermining the efforts of the state government to assist the community to control natural disaster.
He said that the government’s huge investments in controlling the devastation caused by the erosion would fail if the erosion control measure was allowed to collapse.
Obi said that the attitude of the people of the community toward proper sanitation was bad which must be reversed if any meaningful development would take place.
He said that the activities of those who were in the habit of dumping refuse in the drainage was not only dangerous to their environment but would hinder plans by government to open up the hinterlands.
In his remark, the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, commended the state government for its intervention to save the community from collapse.
He described the state government’s intervention as big, revolutionary and worthy of commendation by all and sundry.
“We must commend governor Obi for this very big intervention to save this community from serious ecological disaster. “We can see it all and we can see the drift behind us, if this has not been corrected, I am sure it must have been very difficult to see these houses in the surrounding,’’ he said.
