NUPENG Urges Effective Rail System
The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has urged the Federal Government to implement an effective rail system in order to accord more priority attention to rail transportation in the country.
This was stated by the national president of the union, comrade Igwe Achese, while speaking to The Tide in Port Harcourt recently.
Comrade Achese said transportation through rail was the best means of moving bulk products across the country.
He said that the carnage witnessed on the nation’s highways and the chaotic traffic jams in most cities were due to lack of effective rail networks in the country.
The union leader said that road transportation of petroleum products had caused lots of disasters and losses to petroleum products marketers throughout the country.
The labour leader said that in the 1960s and 70s the country had a functional rail system where rail tankers effectively moved petroleum products from Port Harcourt to Kaduna in the Northern part of the country.
Comrade Achese stressed that “its is government’s responsibility to make sure that there is adequate infrastructure that is constantly maintained and expanded throughout the country.
He said the rail system will fast-track the movement of petroleum products to save wastage usually suffered by members of the union.
