Katsina State Government says it has allocated 18,300 bags of subsidised fertiliser to farmers for dry season farming in some parts of the state. Chairman, Katsina South Senatorial Zonal Fertiliser Distribution Committee, Alhaji Lawal Usman, disclosed this to newmen in Malumfashi. According to him, the “timely allocation” to farmers is to enhance irrigation farming in the zone, covering 11 local governments.

Usman said the figures represented 799 tonns allocated to the general dry season farmers and 116 tonns for farmers under the state government’s irrigation support scheme.

According to him, the general farmers are spread across all the local government areas in the zone. He said that farmers on irrigation support scheme in Ruwan Sanyi, Mashigi, Gangara and Mahuta communities benefited from the allocation.

Other communities included Mairuwa, Bakori, Tafoki and Madinka. Usman explained that the distribution teams visited farm sites before making allocation to each of the benefitting groups. He said a bag of fertiliser would be sold at subisidised price of N1,750.

He commended Gov. Ibrahim Shema for his efforts to develop the agriculture sector through interest-free loan scheme, subsidy for tractor hiring and other farming tools.

He expressed optimism that the support would enhance productivity.

He, however, said there were shortages in some areas and that a report had been forwarded to the state government for consideration.

The chairman cautioned the beneficiaries against re-selling the commodity and that they should rather use it on their farms.
