Group Wants Fair Competition In Scholarship Awards
A socio-cultural group, Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro Constituency Movement (ANONCOM) of Rivers State, has
called for the introduction of open examination in the selection of candidates
for the on-going Dakuku Peterside Scholarships Progrmame into Nigerian
universities.
The
House of Representative Member representing Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro Constituency in
Rivers State, Hon. Dakuku Peterside is currently running a university
scholarship programme with forms available in the two local government councils
to select not fewer than ten students across the two local government areas to
study medicines, law, engineering among other professional disciplines in the
Nigeria’s Universities,” the group disclosed.
The
group chairman, Mr Austine B. Epelle made the call Sunday in an interview with The
Tide, after an in-door meeting of
the group in Port Harcourt.
Mr
Epelle said, the call was necessary following complaints that the selection
process was not open and that some people are making moves to hijack the
programme.
He
said, the group was concerned about the scholarship and other development
programmes and projects, as development and peace among the communities were
the group major aims and objectives in the area.
Mr
Epelle noted that the sponsorers of the scholarship programme, Hon. Dakuku
Peterside was massively voted for by the people of the area to represent them
in the House of Representatives.
He
said, the group has already set up a committee headed by one Joshua Eneotu to
inspect and access the performances of various political leaders, especially as
it offers the two local government areas of the constituency.
The group chairman further explained
that the committee would also assess the performances of Senator Magnus Abe,
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the two local government council’s chairmen
among others, in the area especially in the area of development programmes and
projects.
