The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has called for the involvement of its personnel in road construction, to further enhance safety on the roads.

Unit Commander of the FRSC in Iruekpen, Edo, Mr. Udeme Eshiet made the suggestion in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Iruekpen.

He said the involvement of Safety and Engineering Department of the commission on road construction would ensure safety and durability of roads.

Eshiet said the suggestion would help to highlight vital information about the current and possible future volume of traffic on the roads.

He said apart from reducing dangerous bends on the roads, the commission’s imput would enhance durability of the roads since the volume of traffic would be considered during construction for appropriate road thickness.

The FRSC official said inadequate funding was the major problem of the organisation. Eshiet said lack of operational vehicles, ambulances and other equipment was negatively affecting activities of the unit.

He urged corporate organisations and wealthy individuals to support the FRSC. “Effectiveness of the commission would have been more if there were more operational tools to work with. “In spite of these short comings, however, I am happy that Nigerians are beginning to appreciate the presence of the FRSC on Nigerian roads.

“Seeing us alone on the roads brings about their safety consciousness,” he said.
