FHA, Lagos Partner To Revamp Festac Estate
As part of efforts to revamp the ailing Festac town estate in Lagos the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Council in Lagos State have entered into partnership to redevelop the decaying infrastructure at the estate.
Already, the two authorities have commenced extensive search towards revamping one of the biggest estates in Africa, which was built as a festival village for the Black Festival of Arts and Culture, popularly called “Festac Town.
Few weeks ago, an International Consultant and the Local Government Council met to finalise talks on how to redevelop the once super estate designed with modern architecture, building development, infrastructure and engineering.
According to the Amuwo Odofin’s council chairman, Ayodele Adewale, the renewal of the estate, will attract a toll system, as he said that they are proposing a tolling system that would be used to raise funds for redevelopment, and that the plan had been consented to by FHA and residents Association.
He said that the toll gates would be stationed at various entry and exit points of the town and the fund collected would be used to repair the damaged sewage system, road network and other decaying facilities.
The Council Chairman lamented the deplorable state of some basic facilities in Festac Town which he said was due to abuse by residents and paucity of funds, and revealed that the authorities are looking forward to commence the scheme within the first quarter of this year.
