Campaigner Seeks Law To Protect Widows Rights

The Publicity Secretary of Rivers chapter of Civil Liberties
Organisation (CLO),  Mr Livingstone
Wechie, has called on the National Assembly to make a law to protect and
guarantee the rights of widows.

Wechie made
the call in an interview in Port Harcourt on Friday.

He said the
law should prescribe punishment for violators of the law on the rights of
widows.

“We have a
case of one Regina Nyaki whose husband died in 2011. Her late husband’s
relatives dispossessed her of the deceased property. They evicted her from the
family house, and today she has no place to call her home,’’ he said.

Wechie urged
the National Assembly to rise in defence of widows.

He said that
CLO had been inundated with reports of acts of inhumanity in the state,
especially against widows.

Wechie said
it was necessary to tackle the problem through legislation, adding that a law
would restore confidence in widows.

He
called for support to CLO and other human rights organisations to protect the
rights of less privileged persons in the society, particularly widows.
