‘Enforce Ban On Alcohol Sale In Parks’

The Nigeria Police force have been called upon to enforce the law against sale of alcohol  and other hard drugs in the various motor parks in the country.

The chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Abali Park, Port Harcourt, Chief Bethel Dappa made the call at an enlightenment forum organised by the Rivers State command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in Port Harcourt recently.

Chief Dappa, who attributed most accidents on the road to intake of alcohol and other drugs by drivers said when checked properly by the law enforcement agencies would  reduce carnage on our roads.

He said government should take drastic steps towards ensuring total ban on sale of alcohol in motor parks, stressing that such steps  would help safe lives of drivers and their passengers, saying, “let all learn to drive safe for tomorrow”.

The NURTW chairman advised drivers not to drive while drunk as well as also stop patronising second  tyres otherwise called Belguim tyres, adding that they could be disappointed on the road.

The union boss also called on the state government to rehabilitate the roads within Port Harcourt and its environs, stressing that bad roads had been causing a lot of untold hardship to motorists in Rivers State and other parts of the country.

He however thanked the organizer of the programme for closing the Abali Park for their campaign and assured that the drivers would comply strictly with their advise as they are ever ready to energy with all road traffic agency in the state for free flow of traffic in and outside the city.

Meanwhile, the chief vehicle inspection office (VIO) in Rivers State, Chief Sylvarnus Obu Dappa has said officers of the outfit are friends of the motorists provided their vehicles are in good condition, adding that all motorists should obey the rules and regulation of safe driving.

“Let us think safety first by ensuring that all necessary papers and the vehicle in question is in order,” he noted, and enjoined all vehicle owners to register their vehicles particulars at the appropriate quarters and stop patronising quacks.

The occasion was attended by stakeholders from all walks of life including the sector commander, FRSC, Rivers State, Mr Kayode Olagunju who was represented by Mr Frank Okwueze among others.
