The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Abia State, has charged its personnel to redouble efforts in tackling security challenges during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The new Commandant of NSCDC in Abia Command, Mr Ben Dikuro, gave the charge after addressing the personnel in Umuahia recently.

Dikuro told newsmen after addressing the personnel that there was the need for the officers and men in the state to be more proactive in the discharge of their duties.

“Already intelligence reports reveal that some people have started carrying dangerous weapons, blocking roads to extort monies from travellers and throwing knock-out here and there.

“These kind of acts negates the law of the land and we have communicated community leaders on the need for them to advice their wards because anybody caught would not go unpunished,’’ he said.

He added that with the recent authority to carry arms, the command would put in its best to “smoke-out’’ criminals in Abia.

He said that any officer linked with wrongful usage of firearm would be summarily tried within 24 hours in line with the code of discipline of the corps.

On oil vandals, he said that a Rapid Response Squad and Anti-Vandal Team, had been deployed to monitor the activities of vandals of across the oil bearing communities.

He said the main assignment of the team was to prevent the diversion of petroleum products, check oil bunkering and vandalisation with oil pipelines and oil facilities.

He advised residents to always reach out to NSCDC to report any act of criminality, adding that security was a collective responsibility.
