The Rivers State Government has said that its decision to ensure an annual carnival in the state is to diversify the economy from the present oil and gas to tourism.

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Nabbs Imegwu, who said this during a colloquium in Port Harcourt emphasised that the state government is aware that oil and gas will dry up one day hence the need to develop the tourism sector.

According to him, it was in realisation of this that the administration initiated a tourism policy for the state.

The commissioner described this year’s CARNIRIV as unique in view of the fact that it marks the centenary anniversary of the city of Port Harcourt, stressing that this situation has made the organisers to package programmes that has made the festival unique.

Dr Imegwu also said that the state government has embarked on various transformational policies that have impacted positively on the lives of the people and urged continuous support to the administration.
