Rivers State Abula team at the ongoing 2012 National Sports Festival, Eko 2012, in Lagos yesterday made a clean sweep of all three gold medals at stake in the event to further shore up Team Rivers total medal haul at the festival.

The male team dominated their final match, handing a comprehensive three sets to nil victory to their Bayelsa opponents .

The female team on their part emulated their male counterparts by equally despatching Delta State three sets to nil to win the gold. The gold medal rush was initiated by the Mixed-Doubles team after coming from behind to beat their Bayelsa counterparts to the gold in the Mixed-Doubles’ final match.

Team Bayelsa had raced to a two sets to one lead  so fast in the game that many thought that an upset was on the card until Rivers turned the table in the fourth set with a close 15-14 victory.

However, in the decisive fifth set,  Team Rivers delivered an inspiring performance to claim the set and gold medal via  a convincing 15-8 victory.

It is now mission accomplished for the  Abula team and  coach, Hakeem who had promised to deliver on their promise of three golds

According to him, “We did it at Garden City Games 2011, we have done it again”.

It will be recalled that the Abula team won the available three gold medals during the last festival in Port Harcourt.
