ONELGA Laments Oil Firms’ Neglect
Multinational oil companies operating in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State may in no distant time incur the wrath of the people if they continue to pay deaf ears to the plight of their host communities.
The chairman of Agwolo Emergent Union, Port Harcourt branch, Eze Sunday N. Nwoba who said this at the end of year/thanksgiving get-together of the union regretted that multinational oil companies in ONELGA have abandoned the agreed social responsibilities to their host communities which include the provision of infrastructural facilities.
The traditional ruler who is the Eluoha Usomini I of Ogbaland noted that the people of the area, particularly Omoku town, the headquarters have nothing to show for the bulk of oil and gas tapped from their land, pointing out that a time will soon come when the people would no longer condone the bad treatment or neglect noted out to them by the oil companies.
He explained that the Agwolo Emergent Union has so far awarded scholarships to five children of its members in both secondary and tertiary institutions and urged the members to make love and unity their watchwords.
In his speech, the chairman of the occasion, Chief Benneth Wokocha decried the high rate of crime, particularly kidnapping in the local government area, describing it as an abomination in the land, while calling on government to beef up security in the area.
He enjoined the people of the area to be their brothers’ keepers, adding that by so doing, security of lives and properties would be assured.
Also speaking, t he woman adviser of the union, Mrs Beatrice Wokocha advised women to respect their husbands and ensure the good upbringing of their children by monitoring their activities and the friends they keep.
Ina vote of thanks, the union’s secretary, Mr. Godfrey Ahiakwo charged the members to uphold the culture of hard work and humility bequeathed to them by their forefathers.
