NURSS Dissolves Senate Leadership, Appoints Acting President
National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) has dissolved its Senate leadership over an alleged misappropriation of N3.8 million union fund.
In a letter addressed to the President of NURSS, and made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt, Tuesday, the acting Senate (leader) president, Comrade Ekine Gordon alleged that the former Senate President Comrade Nsanem Gospel Nsanem, the Deputy President, Comrade. Chinda, the Chief Whip Comrade Stanley Owhondah, had misappropriated N3.8 million.
According to the letter which was signed by Comrade Ekine Gordon the misappropriation of N3.8 million is an act of gross misconduct and a contravention of section 9 (a & b) of the National Union of Rivers State Students Constitutions.
He said the dissolution of the senate leadership was by a unanimous resolution of the senate, passed on Monday, 9th of December, 2012.
Comr. Ekine said that the National President of the Union, Comrade Warmate Awoloye had called for a joint meeting of the Executive and Senate arms which was widely publicised but the Senate arm had feigned ignorance of the joint meeting. The acting president of Senate disclosed that the said senate leadership that said it wasn’t aware of the meeting had surreptitiously delegated the Chief Whip and Deputy Chief to take the capitation to the National President without the knowledge of other senators.
Consequently, the Senate invoked section 18 (1) of the NURSS Constitution and dissolved the senate leadership and made the Cleark of the House, the acting Senate President.
The letter emphaised the supremacy of the constitution and ordered the former senate leadership to return all official documents to the new leadership.
