Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, a member of PDP Board of Trustees, has described the de-registration of 28 political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a welcome development.

Iwuanyanwu, who made this known in an interview with The Tide’s source in Abuja said the number of political parties in the country was embarrassing.

“I think INEC has done well and had done the right thing by de-registering these political parties. It should do more.

“A party that cannot win any electoral seat should not be regarded as a political party.

“I do not mind if political parties are 100, but they should be able to capture electoral seats. We are talking of parties that cannot win a single seat and do not exist in any state,” he said..

According to him, a party is supposed to have a credible office in all the States, Local Governments and Wards in the country.

“Most of the de-registered parties do not exist beyond Abuja and they are in rented office.’’

He said most of the de-registered political parties existed by names because of the weakness of the law on party registration.

Iwuanyanwu alleged that most times, the de-registered parties often collect commission from politicians who could not get nomination forms from their original parties.

He advised INEC to introduce stringent measures for the registration of political parties to encourage politicians to work hard to strengthen the country‘s democracy.
