The Aba chapter of Women in Technical Education and Development (WITED), has selected 11 indigent science students in public girls secondary schools for assistance in the career.

The group, domiciled at the Abia State Polytechnic, is to pay the registration fees of the students for the West African School Certificate Examinations.

The Coordinator of the chapter, told Mrs Nnenna Uka,  newsmen in Aba on Tuesday that it would also pay for the UTME for five of the girls.

Uka said the organisation would also give scholarship awards to any of the students who passed UTME to attend federal tertiary institutions and the Abia State Polytechnic.

She said the organisation instituted the programme to identify and tackle factors impeding females from participating in science and technology education.

According to her, the programme also entails sensitisation programmes for policy makers, school heads, career teachers and community/opinion leaders to support females in science and technical education.

It also involved periodic researches to ascertain the level of involvement of females in science and technical educations, she said.

She said the long-term objective was to enhance the participation of the girl-child and women in such programmes at all levels.
