Enugu NLC Prays For Plateau Workers
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Enugu State on Monday organised a special prayer
session in solidarity with the striking Plateau workers.
Workers in Plateau had been on strike to demand for the implementation of the N18, 000
minimum wage for local government workers in the state.Tthe prayer session was well attended by leaders of the union and workers in the state.
The state NLC Chairman, Mr Chumaife Nze, said the directive for the session came from the national leadership of the union. He expressed optimism that God would answer their prayers,
adding that power belongs to the people.
“We have been given directive by the National Head Quarters ofNLC to conduct this prayer session. ‘This prayer session is being organised in all the states of the federation for God to intervene in the payment of the local government workers in Plateau. It is the people that elected the government in power. We believe that God will listen and hear the prayers of the masses because we are fighting for our rights. This is Christmas period and the workers need their salaries to celebrate with their families this season,” Nze said.
He said that workers in the state would commence a solidarity strike on the Dec. 20, adding that it was a move to make the government pay the council workers in the state.
Rev. Emeka Onoh, who led the session, prayed God to change the heart of the government in Plateau.l ‘We are praying to God to touch the heart of the government in power to see the plight of these workers that is far degenerating and pay their salaries. It is unfair that some workers are living in penury, some others are lavishing in wealth,” the cleric said.
Some of the workers called on Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau to settle their local government colleagues to avoid an indefinite national industrial action.
Some workers and labour leaders appeared in black attires chanting solidarity songs in favour of their Plateau counterparts.
