Enugu Assembly Receives Report On Rape Incidents

Members of Adhoc Committee appointed by the Enugu State House of Assembly on the incessant rape of old women between the age of 60 to 90 years and above in Opi, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State have subitted their report to the House with a call on the Nsukka Divisional Police Office (DPO), to as a matter of urgency re-arrest the alleged rapists earlier released by that office and prosecurte them accordingly to serve as deterrent to others.

The committee has also in its report submitted to the House further recommended the establishment of police station in Opi Town for quick intervention of police in criminal activities such as rape , house breaking and armed robbery.

The police, the report went on, should also commence immediately surveillance of the Opi community which should be sustained for a long time in order to curb the excesses of criminals especially rapists and armed robbers in the area.

The report also called on the chairman of Nsukks Local Government Council to ensure that adequate logistics were provided to the Nigeria police and other security agents in Nsukka Local Government in order to enhance their operations in Opi town.

 “The town union executives and the four Igwes in Opi town in collaboration with the neighbourhood Watch groups should assist the police and other security agents in identifying and arresting those engaging in ciminal activities, especially Indian Hemp business in Opi community”.

The committee furthr recommended that “The Igwe of Ogbozalla Opi, His Royal Highness, Igwe F. A. Obguabor should immmediately dissolve his cabinet and reconstitute a fresh one in order to ensure that people aiding ciminals in the community are not made members of the cabinet”.

According to the committee “The raping of old women in Opi Ogbozalla in particular and Opi in general is real. The criminal act is being carried out by youths in the community suspected to belong to a cult group known as Banga. Apart from raping, they engage in other criminal activities such as robbery, house breaking and consumption of hard drugs such as mariguana (Indian Hemp). Some of these criminals possess arms which they brandish occasionally in order to scare people”, members of the committee further stressed.
