Amaechi, Others Bag Doctorate Degree
The Governing Council of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto has conferredHonoris Causa Award Of Doctors of Letters on the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Rivers State Governor , Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for his service to humanity, promotion of educational advancement and good governance.
Speaker of the House of Representative, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and the Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji, Dr. Aliyu Wamako were also conferred withHonoris Causa Awards of Doctors of Laws at the weekend.
Addressing the Awardees and graduands of the University, President Goodluck Jonathan said, his administration was committed to transforming the citizenry towards achieving higher and quality education for the country.
Jonathan who spoke through the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Professor Julius Okojie said the importance of education to the overall development of Nigerians cannot be over-emphasized as it is poised to transform the country in all spheres of endeavor.
He also said, the Federal Government would continue to support all tertiary institutions of learning to discharge their mandate as catalyst of national progress. “l wish to congratulate our graduands, families and friends for their years of diligence, which has been recognized by the university as a reflection of their hard work in the past years, but life is a great enterprise of profitability, even as the graduands would be stepping into new challenges , with their level of education they would be complimented by their character as given by the University”, President Jonathan added.
Speaking at the ceremony Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi said the awardees should be seen as critical instruments to national growth and development.
“This place of learning was also acknowledged by Usmanu Danfodiyo’s brother Abdulahi, even as his brothers were renowned scholars as well, but even if we forget the past, can anyone forget our respected and elderly statesman, and former President of this country, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who was a teacher, scholar and lover of education, whose blue prints are deeply edged in sands of our nation’s history,” Amaechi said.
“lt is therefore obvious that our society’s development and growth will depend on how education is given it’s pride of place.”
While dedicating the Honoris Causa Awards on him to the people of Rivers State and the nation in general, Governor Amaechi promised that the recipients would not relent in their pursuit of good governance and development for the citizenry.
Speaking earlier, Chancellor of the Usmanu Dan Fodiyo University, Sokoto, HRH Obi Dr. Gibson Nwosu described the success of the prestigious University as a success story, and further commended the graduands and students of the institution for their peaceful disposition during the academic exercise.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor R. A Shehu noted that a total of 11,530 graduated while six eminent Nigerians were conferred with Honoris Causa by the University.
