‘LG Elections, Bedrock Of Democracy’

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described the councillorship and chairmanship elections as the bedrock of democracy in any country.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Hon Aniedi Ikoiwak, who stated this recently while receiving the 3rd commissioner of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), who Spoke against those calling for the dissolution of the state Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC).

He noted that elections at the local government levels are very important because those elected are closest to the people than at other levels, and since the SIEC is also closest to the grassroots, accountability of those elected can be more easily be effected. 

The RSIEC advised members of the commission to be upright and always ensure free and fair elections assuring that INEC will be willing to assist the commission whenever their services are needed.

He commended the new board on their appointments and also for accepting to contribute their quota to the growth of democracy.

Earlier, the chairman of the commission, Prof. Augustine Ahiazu said the visit to INEC was to sustain the existing cooperate between the two electoral bodies and urged INEC to maintain the relationship.
